Being able to take risks is fundamental to success in any endeavor we undertake.  Being able to take a risk means being able to push yourself to do those things that you may be uncomfortable doing in order to achieve a goal.  Common risks that many are afraid to take include such things as expressing ourselves in public, learning to do something new, investing in an activity or purchase without any guarantees of return on our investment, and even in some cases simply changing the way we do something.  Risk, like change is always frightening, and taking a risk leaves us wide open and vulnerable to pain, criticism, embarrassment and perhaps loss.  Why then, is being able to take risks so important?  Consider these five main reasons:

1.    Risk taking improves self-confidence and fosters self-esteem.  With every risk you take there is an opportunity for success, and success breeds confidence.  Sure, with every risk there is also the possibility of failure, but even if you fail you gain the confidence that comes from knowing you at least tried.  The more often you try new things, the more often you will succeed and the more passionate you will become about your goals.

2.    Risk taking lessens mental anguish.  Indecision is actually far more draining than making a decision and taking action.  If we constantly wait to do something until we feel absolutely certain that we can do it perfectly, odds are we won’t have the energy required to complete the goal.  Successful people put their energies into taking action instead of thinking about taking action.

3.    Risk taking is the only way to promote growth.  Like a child learning to walk, taking a risk means taking action, and only by taking action can we produce results.  

4.    Risk taking improves our chances of success by teaching us what works.  In order to improve results, we often have to change our attitudes, behaviors and the way we do things.  When we aren’t afraid to risk change we are able to try new things and ultimately learn what works best for us.

5.    Risk taking promotes happiness.  If we fail to try something that we would really like to do, we are left only with feelings of regret and unhappiness.  We are much happier when we can say we tried, even if we didn’t succeed.

Risk taking isn’t easy and it is often uncomfortable and frightening, but it is the only way we can push ourselves to see how far we can go, and learn what goals we can achieve.  It is the only way we can live to our fullest potential and realize our dreams.  It means the difference between looking back and reflecting on what we’ve accomplished and looking back with regret at what we wished we would have done.  Those who fear risk and hold back will accomplish very little.  Those who see risk as an opportunity for potential growth will forge ahead and accomplish great things.  Which one will you be?

Clients often ask us the correct way to go about setting out an invoice so we thought we’d put together this useful guide to help you get it right first time and ensure you include all the required information.

If you ever encounter issues with non-payment, you’ll find that including the right wording on your invoices will make it much easier for you to state your case.

What Information is required on an Invoice?

Company Details

Your company’s name and trading address, telephone number, email address, registered office address, company number and VAT registration number (if VAT registered) must all be stated clearly on your invoice.

Agency/Client Details

The full name and address of the agency/client that you are invoicing should be included on the invoice.

Fees

List details of the services or products provided, the gross amount payable, any VAT amount due (if you are VAT registered) and then the final amount due. If you charge an hourly rate for your services, state that rate.

Purchase Order Number or Contact Reference

If your client or agency uses Purchase Orders, clearly state this number on your invoice so as to speed up the payment process. If Purchase Orders are not used, state the name of the contact that ordered the products or services.

Invoice Number

Each invoice should have its own individual invoice number. The number can also include letters which may help you identify particular clients.

Dates

Include the date the invoice was produced and the payment due date. Usually the due date will be 30 days after the invoice was raised although terms do vary from between 7 and 60 days.

Payment Terms

Confirm how you would like to receive the payment, either by cheque or bank transfer and clearly state when your invoice should be paid.

With a cheque payment, clearly set out who the cheque should be made payable to and advise the client to write the invoice number on the back of the cheque to aid you in identifying the payment once received.

For bank transfers, state your bank account details: account name, sort code, account number and payment reference (usually the invoice number) to enable the agency/client to forward the money to the right account.

Late Payments

To help protect yourself from late payments you may quote the Commercial Debts Act which allows you to charge a late payment fee of £40 once your stated terms are exceeded. Include the following wording:

“We understand and will exercise our statutory right to claim interest and compensation for debt recovery costs under the late payment legislation if we are not paid according to agreed credit terms.”

Timesheets

If your client or agency requires a timesheet to back up the invoice then remember to include one. Don’t forget to take a copy before submitting it!

Sending your Invoice

Multi Level Marketing and Network Marketing are essentially the same selling method used by many companies in their marketing strategy. A large number of self employed agents earn a commission on sales they make, and on sales made by other agents that they recruit. The selling method has received criticism from regulators around the globe in the past. However, it is a legitimate marketing tool.

Multi Level Marketing works by having a sales team consisting of a few promoters at the top of the chain that begin to recruit a team, or ‘down line’ of agents to sell the company’s products. The down line’s first level will in turn seek new agents who will also be tought to recruit more. Some down lines can reach many levels of agents, those at the top earning progressively more as they take a percentage of all revenue derived from their down line.

The system has been criticised because there can be a tendency for the sales team to focus more on recruiting than on selling. Some marketing programs insist on new recruits buying a batch of stock at the start, which straight away earns commissions all the way up the line. There are tales of hundreds of agents with garages full of stock supporting the wealthy lifestyles of the promoters.

US giant Amway decided to use Network Marketing to market its business over half a century ago. Now it employs over 3 million independent sales agents all over the globe and with a turnover of more than $8 billion in 2008 it is a highly profitable and successful business. However, even Amway has not escaped the United States Federal Trade Commission’s attention in the past, leading to changes and strengthening of the whole industry framework such that currently this form of selling is a widely acceptable method.

As is often the case, Network Marketing still suffers from the bad image it developed years ago. The past criticism of being like a ‘cult’ or a ‘pyramid’ scheme still lingers. Other studies have revealed that far less than this make any profit after the cost of building the business is taken into account. There is other research that has been carried out in the United States that shows the average income of Network Marketers to be around $3,000 to $4,000. This is nowhere near a living wage in 2009.

Network Marketing is different to pyramid selling schemes. The latter are illegal in most countries including the United States and the United Kingdom. A Pyramid operation depends on a continual flow of new entrants being recruited into the scheme to fund the payouts to those nearer the top. In principle it is not much different from a Ponzi style fraud! In the past, some Network Marketing schemes insisted on large stock purchases upfront by all new recruits, which emulated the pyramid’s style.

Today, Multi Level Marketing can be a highly respectable and profitable business. Companies such as Amway and Kleeneze will provide a valuable extra income for many, and substantial earnings for a few networking professionals. It goes without saying that not all organizations offering Network Marketing programs will be equal, and it pays to do your due diligence on any new business opportunity before parting with your money.

Well first of all, don’t panic! Everybody comes across sunburn at least once in there lives, sometimes, it’s unavoidable! If you ever do get sunburn, it’s important you first know what to do during the 3 different phases.

Phase one is the most commonly suffered phase of sunburn, but as common as it may be, it’s still painful, and still considered a dangerous stage, albeit the least dangerous. Phase one is more uncomfortable than anything. In minor cases, people find there’s a lot of heat in there skin, and in more serious cases of Phase One, people can find movement difficult (for example, reaching up for things etc) and the affected areas quite sensitive to the touch. Remember, a sunburn is exactly what is sounds like, a burn to the skin caused by the sun, so you need to treat it as such.

Phase two is typically indicated by small blisters. These blisters have been known to cause considerate pain, but as long as they are only small and ‘phase 2′ blisters, they should start to go away within 5-10 days. It’s essential that you do not pierce, pop or scratch them, you must leave them to heal themselves, and let them burst on there own. If you pop them yourself, especially if you have dirty hands, it could cause infection and lead to scarring. If you are unsure as to the seriousness of your blisters, it’s best to seek medical advice.

Phase 3 is the most painful phase of sunburn, but as well as this, it’s also the most dangerous, so it’s important you know how to recognise it, so that you can immediately seek medical attention. Phase 3 is known to cause large, water filled blisters and skin eruptions. Both these are very dangerous, so it’s imperative you immediately seek medical advice and attention, because if left they can lead to wide-spread infection, and even cellular damage. Similar to phase two, the key to this phase is to not pop your blisters, and try not to catch them, or rub them after showering, and instead pat them dry. Your doctor should be able to prescribe something to help and prevent infection, so it’s important, upon recognizing these symptoms, you immediately visit your local practitioner.

If you do get caught in the sun, there are a few things you can do to help relieve the pain, and sometimes prevent phase one from progressing into phase two.

A lot of people think that they’re ‘already burned’ so why not stay out for another couple of hours… This is wrong, and by doing this you’re only causing more damage, and worsening your burns. The extra time spent in the sun can cause mild sunburn to progress into blisters, so if you’ve been burned, then get out, and stay out of the sun.

Another important tip to mention is that most people find it helpful to have cold showers or baths to take the heat out of the skin during phase one. Another handy tip if you feel like you want to lie in a cold bath forever, is milk and tea. Milk and tea are fantastic when it comes to cooling the skin. Used teabags, put with ice to keep them cool, are often praised as the tea works as an antioxidant and draws heat out of the skin. If you wish to use milk, Apply cool, not cold, milk with a clean cloth or gauze to your skin. The coolness soothes the initial heat felt by the skin and the milk will create a protein film that helps ease the discomfort.

And when it comes to sunscreen, remember to apply 20 minutes before leaving so it has time to work, and don’t forget an SPF lip balm! Our lips can burn too, and it’s just as uncomfortable, so it’s definitely worth thinking about.

It’s important to remember that sometimes getting sunburned can be unavoidable! But it is somewhat preventable, or at the very least, to reach no further then a minor phase 1. Always remember, for your health and beauty, avoid spending too much time in the sun, especially between 11am – 3pm, when the sun is at its highest and most lethal point. And always apply sunscreen lotion or cream having a minimum SPF of 15. Apply sunscreen in generous amount and reapply it after being in sun for long period. And don’t forget! Sunscreen gets reduced by sweating or swimming.
